[From a Greenwire article by Phil Taylor, sub. req’d] The Agriculture Department today announced plans to invest $211 million in sage grouse conservation through 2018, a final push to prevent the bird’s extinction that calls for expanded efforts to combat invasive weeds and rangeland fire.
The department’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will use the farm bill money to seed more lands with native plants, utilize more prescribed grazing and build more than 200 miles of fuel breaks across the Great Basin.
It will also seek to permanently protect close to 400,000 private acres with conservation easements, while removing pinyon pine and juniper trees on an additional quarter-million acres, among other steps…
